The Independent Director Limited recommends a five step approach:

Overview
Is a non-executive director role right for me?
Finding an assignment
Managing my NED portfolio
Apply and add your cv

1. Determine what you can offer

Candidates seeking a non-executive director should ask a colleague how they are perceived by others in the workplace, and what particular skills they bring to the boardroom.

We can help with a formal evaluation using 360 feedback and other psychometric profiles, to assist you in making the right presentation of your skills.

2. Prepare a new "NED" CV

This should be targeted at non-executive appointments, and highlight your skills in listening, and influencing without executive authority.

3. Register

Register with established agencies such as The Independent Director Limited (see Apply and add your cv)

4. Read the press

Read the local and national press for opportunities. Most public sector and many private sector positions will be advertised.

5. Plan training

Plan appropriate formal training, to ensure that you are well prepared, and demonstrate your commitment to performing the role well.
